Here is the first Squawkatiel's Dozen of March! I meant to get this one up earlier but I've been way too busy lately. Once again, I bring you 6 songs you can download for free, and 6 more that aren't available to download for free but are still worth a listen.
Downloads:
1. First up is PT Walkley's catchy song "Leeches", the second single to be released from his new album Shoulders. This song has very funny, clever lyrics and reminds me a little of They Might Be Giants or Jonathan Coulton, but at the same time offers plenty of melodic hooks.
2. La Sera (Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls) is releasing her third album, Hour of the Dawn, through Hardly Art Records on May 13th. Here is the first single, "Losing to the Dark".
3. Ghost Modern is a new band from Boston, and they remind me a lot of the band Stellastarr* (who had an excellent debut album). Here is "Miles Away", my favorite of the three songs on their Soundcloud page.
4. British band Johnny Foreigner are back with a new album You Can Do Better, which comes out next week. Here is their first single from it, "Le Sigh". Recommended if you like Los Campesinos!
5. Ten Sleep are a Canadian band who have released a couple of singles so far. Here is their song "Lion Cub", a catchy melodic indie rock song, with a sound somewhere between Local Natives, Minus the Bear and Two Door Cinema Club.
6. Keeping with the lion theme, here is the song "King Leo" by the British band Hi-Tide. You will need to give your email address if you want to download this song, which you can find here.

1. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have returned with their third album Days of Abandon, which will be released on. Their 2009 self-titled debut was my favorite album of that year, and their sophomore release Belong was very good as well, so expect to hear a lot from the new album on my show this spring. Here is the first single, "Simple and Sure":
2. Four Phonica are a Ukrainian band who have just released their debut self-titled EP, and from it is their latest single "Sabotage". This song sounds a lot different than anything out there right now: industrial rock similar to bands popular in the late 90's (they remind me of the band Garbage in particular) but bring this style of music into the 2014 with some modern production. The lyrics in the chorus are a little strange, but offer some vivid imagery.
3. Klaxons are back with their first album since 2010's Surfing the Void. The new album, Love Frequency will be released on June 2. From it, here is the song "Children of the Sun" which was produced by Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers.
4. Wends are a Finnish band I featured as one of Flight of the Squawkatiel's Soundcloud Artist of the Week a few months ago. They have released a brand new single called "Love or Let Go".
5. Dream pop band A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who are actually from Philadelphia) will be back with a new album sometime this year. Here is their song "In Love With Useless (The Timeless Geometry In The Tradition of Passing". This song has a lot going on but there is a beautiful song underneath all the crazy sounds.
6. Finally, on a completely different note from the last song, Manchester Orchestra are back with their first album since 2011. COPE will be released on April 1. From it here is the new song "Every Stone".

The Squawkatiel's Dozen #2
Welcome to a special Valentine's Day edition of The Squawkatiel's Dozen. Just like last time, I bring you 6 great songs you can download for free, and 6 songs that aren't available for free but are worth a listen.
First, the downloads:
1. The Honey Trees are a duo from California who will be releasing their debut album Bright Fire in April. "Nightingale" is our first taste of it. The vocals are great in this song, I recommend it if you like Neko Case.
2. Black Twig is a band from Helsinki, Finland. They are signed to the Finnish record label Soliti (who have a bunch of free downloads from their artists on their Soundcloud page) "Pastel Blue" is the first single from their sophomore album Heliogram. This is lo-fi guitar pop a little bit like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart or Veronica Falls.
3. Australian band Nova and the Experience released their EP There's Something Here last summer, but recently released their latest single from it, "Shipwrecked". It's mostly acoustic and very good.
4. "Natural" is the second single from Preston Lovinggood's latest album Shadow Songs which will be released on February 25th. This song is just a little over two minutes long and very catchy.
5. You may have heard My Gold Mask on my show last year, I played a few songs from their album Leave Me Midnight. Here is their brand new single "Battles".
6. Finally, we have Hollow & Akimbo who are a duo from Michigan who have released a great self-titled debut album. Their music covers a wide range of genres, and they have given us a free download of the song "The One Who Has to Carry You Home". This song is more straight forward and less experimental than their other songs, but is one of my favorites on the album.

1. Cloud Nothings are back with the first single from the forthcoming album Here and Nowhere Else. While I haven't been a fan of every Cloud Nothings song I've heard, this song falls into the category of Cloud Nothings songs I do like, so definitely give it a listen.
2. After becoming one of the breakout bands of 2013, Speedy Ortiz return with a new EP called Real Hair. The songs on this EP seem a bit more cheerful than their album Major Arcana. "American Horror" is one of the standouts from it.
3. Eternal Summers are back with a new album called The Drop Beneath which will be out on Kanine Records on March 4th. Here is the first single from it, "Gouge". You may remember their song "You Kill" which I played a few times on my show in 2012 (and came in at #19 on my Top 20 of that year).
4. It's been a while since we last heard from The Hold Steady, but they finally have a new album coming out on March 25th called Teeth Dreams. Here is "I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You", which has some great guitars in addition to their unique lyrical style.
5. Ex Hex is a new band on Merge Records, featuring Mary Timony from the bands Helium and Wild Flag. "Hot and Cold" is their debut single.
6. edapollo - Breathing Lessons
Finally, here is something completely different from the last few songs, from the electronic artist edapollo. Breathing Lessons" is from his new Shallow Swell EP, which has a very fresh sound. I'm not usually a fan of the chopped-up vocal samples approach to electronic music, but there is much more than that going on here and the end result is beautiful.

The Squawkatiel's Dozen #1
Welcome to The Squawkatiel's Dozen, a new feature on this blog where I bring you 6 great songs you can download for free, and 6 songs that aren't available for free but are worth a listen. I have an excellent mix for you, featuring some songs you may have heard on Flight of the Squawkatiel and a bunch of new ones.
Let's start off with the downloads:
1. Dios Mio is a band from London, I recommend them if you like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' mellower songs. Here is their latest single, "Proto":
2. At WRUV, we recently added HeadShy's new album La Belle Epoque, which is a triple EP containing the EPs The Head Chord, The Heart Chord and The Bass Chord. Here is one of my favorite songs from it, "Coma":
3. Straw Man Standing is the project of Travis Webster-Booth, a friend of mine on Facebook who I knew back in junior high/high school. Here is the lead track off his new EP Two Inches of Ash, "Go On Rewind":
4. perth is an experimental band from Australia who have a new album called What's Your Utopia? Here is their song "Drank and Kites and Tomorrow", which I played on my show last week:
5. Snowflake is the musical project of producer D. James Goodwin who has worked with a diverse range of artists including Norah Jones, Murder by Death and Devo. Here is his song "Snakes and Spiders" off the new album We All Grow Toward the Sea:
6. Finally, here is "Sweep" from Leverage Models, off their self-titled album that I have played on my show quite a bit.

2. Morning Arms are a band from Chicago who caught my attention with the title track to their new Moon & Tide EP, which is available from their bandcamp page.
3. Tycho is one of my favorite electronic artists right now, and he has released another song from his forthcoming album Awake, which will be out on March 18. Here is "Montana":
4. Yumi Zouma is a group from New Zealand who have been getting a lot of attention lately for the two singles they have released. They will release a 10" EP on February 11. Here is their debut single "The Brae", which has a dream pop sound you will enjoy if you like Wild Nothing.
5. German band The Notwist are back with their first album in over seven years, Close to the Glass, which will be released on February 25. Their new song "Kong" is more rock and less electronic than their recent albums:

And the winner of Squawkatiel Madness 2013 is...
Congratulations to Beach House on winning Squawkatiel Madness 2013! It was close, but in the end they beat The Strokes by just one vote.

Squawkatiel Madness: Final Round!
So here we are! We started out with 64 Flight of the Squawkatiel artists competing for the grand prize, and now we are down to just 2. One of these bands will get the second hour of this Saturday's episode of Flight of the Squawkatiel dedicated to their music, their side projects, remixes, covers of their songs by other artist, songs by similar artists, and more!
The first band in the final is of course, Beach House. They have dominated most of their matches, with the only close call being their match against Dirty Projectors in the 3rd round which they won by one vote. Beach House won their match against Beach Fossils by a landslide once again, with 100% of the vote.
The second match, however, was a lot closer. The Strokes and The Shins were only separated by one vote in this round, but in the end, it went to The Strokes.
Now it is time for you to decide which of these two bands will win the grand prize. Will it be The Strokes or will it be Beach House? Place your vote at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HDRND9W
Beach House seems to be the favorite to win at this point. But don't count The Strokes out just yet. Luckily for them, their latest album, Comedown Machine, was released today. Will that work in their favor?
This time, we're doing something special. You will have until 7 pm on March 30 to vote, so that means there will be live voting during the first hour of the show, and call-in votes will be counted as well. I will prepare two different playlists for the second hour. The one that gets played will be the one for the winning band! Please only vote once.

Flight of the Squawkatiel presents Squawkatiel Madness 2013!
This month, Flight of the Squawkatiel will be holding a little tournament in honor of March Madness called "Squawkatiel
Madness", where 64 artists who have been featured during the new music

decide who moves on. The winner will get an hour of my March 30th show
dedicated to their music, any side projects if applicable, similar
artists, artists who are on the same record label or they have toured

New Time Slot!
Flight of the Squawkatiel has moved to a new time slot for the fall semester! Tune in on 90.1 WRUV FM Burlington from 4-6 pm every Sunday to hear an hour of great new music, followed by an hour of music from my collection. Today is the first show. An update...
If you've been wondering why the playlist for 6/4/12 (Swedish Indie Pop) isn't up yet, I have been without regular internet access for the past week since I have moved! But don't worry, my apartment will be hooked up for internet on Thursday so the playlists for 6/4/12 and 6/11/12 will be up on Thursday or Friday. And be sure to check those out, because a lot of the songs that were played are available for free, legal download.

Flight of the Squawkatiel is back for the summer semester!
Flight of the Squawkatiel will be coming back for another semester on WRUV, at the same time, 8-10 pm on Mondays. Tune in on Memorial Day for the first show of the new semester, featuring many great new songs including new music from one of my favorite new bands, Kitten!
