Squawkatiel Madness 2014: Round 4 Begins!

Voting for Round 4 of Squawkatiel Madness 2014 has begun! We are down to 8 bands left out of 64. One of these 8 will get the second hour of the April 9th show dedicated to their music, and you get to decide who that will be!

Click here to vote for who you want to advance to the Feathered Four.

Here are the matches in the Avian Eight:

Beach Fossils, who made the Feathered Four last year, are looking to get there once again this year. But standing in their way is Stephen Malkmus, frontman of the beloved 90's band Pavement, and his current band The Jicks who have been going strong for over 10 years.

In what looks to be possibly the most competitive match this round, we have Washed Out, who appear to be popular with the same crowd who carried Beach House to victory last year, up against Real Estate, who just released their newest album Atlas that has been very popular on WRUV.

In the third match we have two of the more surprising artists in the Avian Eight fighting it out for a spot in the Feathered Four. We have Tennis, who have been quite busy with two albums and an EP in the last three years, versus Dr. Dog who are a really great live band.

Finally, in the last match we have two artists who couldn't be more different. Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Ros goes up against dance duo Daft Punk whose popularity has soared in the last year with a hit single and Grammy-winning album.

So who will make it to the Feathered Four? It's up to you. You have until Wednesday, April 2nd at 6 pm to vote for who you want to advance, and then the results will be announced on that night's show.

Squawkatiel Madness - Round 1 Results!

We've reached the end of Round 1 of Squawkatiel Madness! Let's see how you voted:

The biggest upset in Round 1 was The Strokes, who made it all the way to the final round against Beach House last year, but were defeated in the 1st round this year by none other than CocoRosie. All the #1 seeds advanced to Round 2, but in the cases of Vampire Weekend and Gogol Bordello, it was by a very small margin. Votes came in strong for They Might Be Giants, Franz Ferdinand, Daft Punk and Dr. Dog, while many of the other matches were decided by one vote, including Frank Turner's victory over Phoenix, and Wild Nothing's defeat at the hands of Iron & Wine.

Here are the final scores:

Playlist for 3/19/14: The Cold Wave

Here in Burlington, we had unseasonably cold temperatures for March this week, so the theme for last night's show featured an of icy synth rock, vaguely "coldwave" playlist. I figured if I planned on having a cold themed show the weather would finally get warmer, as the weather never wants to cooperate with my show (like last week when we had the snowstorm that delayed Squawkatiel Madness).

In other news, last night's show marked the beginning of Squawkatiel Madness 2014! Voting for Round 1 has opened and you can vote for which artist you want to advance to Round 2 for an opportunity to have the April 9th edition of Flight of the Squawkatiel dedicated to their music. Squawkatiel Madness Delayed Due to Winter Storm

Bad news - today was supposed to be day the voting would begin for the first round of Squawkatiel Madness, but a bad winter storm has hit vermont and Burlington is expected to get up to 2 feet of snow between Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon, and I am unable to get to WRUV to do my show.

Flight of the Squawkatiel will return on March 19th, and you will be able to vote for the first round of Squawkatiel Madness that night.

The Squawkatiel's Dozen #3

Here is the first Squawkatiel's Dozen of March! I meant to get this one up earlier but I've been way too busy lately. Once again, I bring you 6 songs you can download for free, and 6 more that aren't available to download for free but are still worth a listen.

Downloads:

1. First up is PT Walkley's catchy song "Leeches", the second single to be released from his new album Shoulders. This song has very funny, clever lyrics and reminds me a little of They Might Be Giants or Jonathan Coulton, but at the same time offers plenty of melodic hooks.

2. La Sera (Katy Goodman of Vivian Girls) is releasing her third album, Hour of the Dawn, through Hardly Art Records on May 13th. Here is the first single, "Losing to the Dark".

3. Ghost Modern is a new band from Boston, and they remind me a lot of the band Stellastarr* (who had an excellent debut album). Here is "Miles Away", my favorite of the three songs on their Soundcloud page.

4. British band Johnny Foreigner are back with a new album You Can Do Better, which comes out next week. Here is their first single from it, "Le Sigh". Recommended if you like Los Campesinos!

5. Ten Sleep are a Canadian band who have released a couple of singles so far. Here is their song "Lion Cub", a catchy melodic indie rock song, with a sound somewhere between Local Natives, Minus the Bear and Two Door Cinema Club.

6. Keeping with the lion theme, here is the song "King Leo" by the British band Hi-Tide. You will need to give your email address if you want to download this song, which you can find here.

Streams:

1. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have returned with their third album Days of Abandon, which will be released on. Their 2009 self-titled debut was my favorite album of that year, and their sophomore release Belong was very good as well, so expect to hear a lot from the new album on my show this spring. Here is the first single, "Simple and Sure":

2. Four Phonica are a Ukrainian band who have just released their debut self-titled EP, and from it is their latest single "Sabotage". This song sounds a lot different than anything out there right now: industrial rock similar to bands popular in the late 90's (they remind me of the band Garbage in particular) but bring this style of music into the 2014 with some modern production. The lyrics in the chorus are a little strange, but offer some vivid imagery.

3. Klaxons are back with their first album since 2010's Surfing the Void. The new album, Love Frequency will be released on June 2. From it, here is the song "Children of the Sun" which was produced by Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers.

4. Wends are a Finnish band I featured as one of Flight of the Squawkatiel's Soundcloud Artist of the Week a few months ago. They have released a brand new single called "Love or Let Go".

5. Dream pop band A Sunny Day in Glasgow (who are actually from Philadelphia) will be back with a new album sometime this year. Here is their song "In Love With Useless (The Timeless Geometry In The Tradition of Passing". This song has a lot going on but there is a beautiful song underneath all the crazy sounds.

6. Finally, on a completely different note from the last song, Manchester Orchestra are back with their first album since 2011. COPE will be released on April 1. From it here is the new song "Every Stone".

I promise the next Squawkatiel's Dozen will up much quicker than this one. Also, if you missed the last two installments of the Squawkatiel's Dozen, you can find #1 here and #2 here.
